Cut and Fill

We have a cut and fill project for AD5604 redesigning the balancing pond in Barnwood Park, whether that's creating a wetland, creating raised pathways, you need to use the soil already on site and it needs to be accurately measured and drawn.

My dad is a ground worker and today I was able to visit his building site where he is laying down the foundations for a riding arena. It was very useful to see a project with the challenges of where he was going to repurpose the dug out soil, and his solutions.

He dug out the hill where the arena was going, he made sure to keep the top soil separate so this could be repurposed within the surrounding landscape. He used the dug up soil to build up the other end of the arena so that it would lie flat within the bank.

This made a steep drop down on the one side, so his future plans are to smooth it out with more soil no more than a 1:3 gradient, practical for mowers.

It helped me visualise how Cut and Fill works, making it easier for my future projects.
