Kim Wilkie

First impressions of Kim Wilkies landscape Architect page were that it had a lot of white space. It was kept plain and simple bringing attention to the philosophy statement and mini picture icons arranged as a block. In these photos, they had images where light and shadows have been manipulated, natural forms have been highlighted and an image of analysis. Seeing the layout prior to what the images were I though she creates very geometrical designs, straight edges and formal order, however the images themselves displayed a lot of natural forms. I also like his philosophy that ‘Each place has its own special character and identity’ I think this is vital in successful design, and creates enjoyable spaces for people to experience.

Kim Wilkies practice focuses on creating landscapes that people can experience, feel, and fall in love with, “Landscape Architecture deals with man and land, and the stories they tell about one another. We need to listen to the stories and continue the tale, allowing the memory and imagination of what has gone before to inspire fresh design in the evolving pattern.” This is a really descriptive paragraph. Although it’s not many words you can see their ethos, aims and purpose when it comes to landscape architecture. I enjoyed reading it, it made me feel love and inspiration for the designs, the way they care so much for the experiences of other people and how they interpret their landscapes.

‘A good home, a sense of purpose and a feeling of belonging.’

(Peabody Estate, Mission Statement 2017)

Many quotes are listed on his site, this was one that spoke to me, creating spaces that are like home for everyone, bringing people together for purpose and love of the landscapes. Its universal and should be used when it comes to design, creating homes and space of refuge where people feel safe.

One design that caught my eye was Heveningham Hall, Suffolk, there’s a lot of manipulation of topography here, there’s a terrace of grassland in a ‘Fibonacci series fan’ that looks amazing and fits the scene of the historical site. There’s also habitat plans showing care and restoration for the landscapes, improving and not destroying.

I really enjoyed looking at this practice and their projects, I hope to come across more of Kim Wilkies work in the future that spark inspiration.
